All bats are crepuscular animals. They are important bioindicators, effective seed dispersers and
pollinators for various plants, and vital in suppressing arthropods species, including those
identified as pests and of medical importance. Currently, there are 140 species of bats in
Malaysia. They inhabit caves, forests, and even man-made structures across the country from
the extreme north of the Malay Peninsula to the smallest islands off coast of Sabah and
Sarawak.
This book is a labour of love by groups of third generation biologists who made extensive
geographical coverage to study bats in Malaysia. It is produced through a series of expeditions
carried out in the lush Malaysian rainforests since the early 1990s. Pictures hold significant role
in promoting awareness on this elusive, but highly diverse animal. Hence, this book integrates
the most updated taxonomic information, distribution, and photographs of more than 90 species
of bats that have been recorded by the authors throughout Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian
Borneo. This photographic guide will be useful for young biologists, nature lovers, and even
public audience, who share similar interests in the enigmatic flying nocturnal mammals of
Malaysia.
