Field Guide to Trawl Fishes Near Bidong Island celebrates the biodiversity of marine fishes with 169 marine fish species from 62 families. The species presented in this book were described from photographs and/or specimens collected through the annual field work practice in ichthyology and fisheries science courses, with trawling, drift netting, fish trapping and angling activities. These marine fishes are the life and soul of the coastal, with five first-record species in Malaysian waters namely Aseraggodes kobensis (Steindachner, 1896), Iniistius pavo (Valenciennes, 1840), Opistognathus nigromarginatus (Rüppell, 1830), Parapercis diplospilus (Gomon, 1981) and Trichonotus setiger (Bloch & Schneider, 1801), as well as four species including Antennarius hispidus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801), Halicampus grayi (Kaup, 1856), Rogadius pristiger (Cuvier, 1829) and Xiphasia setifer (Swainson, 1839) are recorded for the first time in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. These are accounts that the extant of marine fishes living in the continental shelf and its surrounding seas remain underexplored. We believe that the marine realm in Malaysia is astonishingly rich as being one of the biodiversity hotspot countries. We hope this field guide benefits the reader and helps to recognize some common marine fishes in Malaysia.
